After the birth of her first son, Rebecca suffered from postpartum depression. Her depression forced her to explore her past
as a survivor of abuse and come to terms with her childhood. As another part of her recovery, she looked to her women's
studies background to give her comfort, and found a dearth of literary writing about motherhood, by mothers. So she joined
a local writing group focusing on that issue, spent time writing, and found her voice. Wanting to do more, Rebecca became
a founding editor of the Literary Mama website. Currently, she is the author of the the Literary Mama column "Down Will Come Baby", and also a Reviews Editor at Literary Mama. The editorial board consists of a large number of published authors in the emerging genre of writing about motherhood,
as well as an innovative group of emerging authors. Literary Mama was named by Forbes and Writers Digest as one of the best websites of 2005. In 2006 Seal Press published Literary Mama: Reading for the Maternally Inclined the anthology based
on the best work from the fiction, nonfiction, and poetry departments. Rebecca is also a member of the Motherlode Writer's group based in Berkeley, California.
Rebecca holds a bachelors degree in
Sociology with a minor in Women’s Studies, from The Colorado College, and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies with
a concentration in Women's Studies from the CUNY Graduate Center where she was an editor of the Literary Magazine, Culture
Shock. Rebecca began her career as a campus activist for women’s issues. She ran a performance
art theater group for 3 years, focusing on women’s issues using drama and comedy. She has been a preschool teacher,
a teaching assistant at Hunter College, and has worked with victims of domestic abuse. She is now a full-time freelance writer,
editor and parent. Her work has appeared in the Bay Area best-selling anthology
Wednesday Writers: Ten Years of Writing Women's Lives, on the Literary Mama website, and Literary Mama: Reading for the Maternally Inclined. Ms. Kaminsky recently
appeared as a guest blogger for "On Balance," Leslie Morgan Steiner's parenting column at the Washington Post. She
lives in Berkeley, California with her husband and two sons.
